Half Hollow Hills teachers forego raises for 2011-2012

DIX HILLS, N.Y. (WPIX) - In an unusual move for a teacher's union the Half Hollow Hills Teacher's Association has agreed to reopen their contract with the district and forgo an already approved raise for 2011-2012.

The move was designed to help the district avoid a budget shortfall.

"One of the things that is special about Half Hollow Hills is that we have a very good partnership between the unions, the board and administration," Mel Stern, president of the HHHTA told Newsday.

Stern went on to say that this decision was a winning solution for students, taxpayers and district employees.

The wage freeze will kick in the same time that federal stimulus funds end and will save the school district $3 million, officials said.

"We're thrilled, it's a groundbreaking achievement," district Superintendent Sheldon Karnilow said.

Teachers were slated to get a 3.5 percent raise in 2011-12, but will still get a 3 percent increase next year.

On Monday the school board will vote on the agreement.
